Why does God allow good things to happen to evil people?

Funny question, eh?

Because usually everyone asks the opposite: Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? The problem with that question is that none of us are good. Romans 3:10-12 tells us that:

None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.

In fact, R.C. Sproul even went so far as to reframe the question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” by answering “That only happened once, and He volunteered.” (Mark 10:18 There is only one good, and that is God alone.)

The real question we should be asking ourselves? If God is terrible, why did he make heaven? How is that fair? How is it fair to exchange a mere 80-90 years of heartache and potential suffering for an immortal existence of thousands upon thousands of years of peace? Ephesians 2:7 tells us that God has saved us so that in the ages to come he might show us the exceeding riches of his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Is it possible to earn an eternity of kindness with a few years of submission and obedience? What a ridiculous thought, of course not! God’s goodness will forever outweigh any sacrifice we’ve made in this lifetime.

Of course, he’s not waiting for Heaven to reveal his kindness.

His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23

Goodness and mercy are following us every day of our lives. Psalm 23:6

He is our stronghold in times of trouble. Nahum 1:7

His kindness leads us to repentance. Romans 2:4

God shows up for us now, and that’s great! Because this is the part of our existence where we need him most. Life is full of trouble and heartache and unexpected challenges, but God is with us through it all. So he helps us through life, comforts us in the afterlife, yet outsiders still want to question his goodness? Lay those doubts to rest. We are in good hands.
