The (Hidden) Blessing Of Work

I know a lot of life is comprised of what we frequently refer to as mundane tasks, but I think God intended us to find solace in such things. It’s nice to know that some combinations are always a certainty.

Do you want a clean kitchen? Then take the time to wash the dishes and wipe the counters and sweep the floor. Done! Do you want clean laundry? Then take the time to set your servants to work by loading them with dirty clothes. Push a few buttons, walk away for a couple hours, and voila! Clean laundry. Do you want a warm breakfast because it’s a freezing spring morning in Alaska? Then fire up the oven, sautee some sausage and onions, crack the eggs, layer a pan with hash browns and cheddar cheese goodness, toss it in, and wait awhile. Yum!

And for the moms of little ones out there – yes, I know it feels like your house is never clean. But in a few years, your kids will be cooking for you! Also, I’m fairly certain there’s a full surface area in your house that is entirely clean. It’s called the ceiling. You can always take comfort in the ceiling being clutter-free.

Other things in life are not as simple:

Waiting for a diagnosis.

Looking over the checkbook to see if you can make ends meet.

Checking in with a friend because they’re struggling.

A lot of life is filled with uncertainties and unknowns, but I think work was God’s way of giving us a constructive way to handle all those unknowns. So carry on friends. We will discover a lot more joy when we learn to do seemingly mundane things with the same gusto we muster for our more adventurous days.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. -Colossians 3:15-17
